The main fields of research of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF) are optical coatings, optical systems and metrology, micro optical systems and precision engineering. The focus of the application-oriented research are in the fields multi-functional optical multi-layers, micro-structured surfaces, characterizing of surfaces and coatings, micro-optical systems, waveguide optics, fibre lasers and their application, optical measurement systems and sensors, systems for optics-characterization, fine mechanical precision systems, and procedures of optics assembly.
